Travelers Often Unaware of Voided Terrorism Benefits, Says Squaremouth

Travelers often purchase policies with terrorism benefits and mistakenly believe they will be covered in the event of an attack. However, these benefits do not always guarantee coverage.

St. Petersburg, FL (PRWEB) September 25, 2012

The recent terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, which left the ambassador and three other Americans dead, is an unfortunate reminder of the continued violence of the region. It is critical that Americans take extra precautions when traveling to countries with Department of State travel warnings, such as Libya. According to travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, travelers often purchase policies with terrorism benefits and mistakenly believe they will be covered in the event of an attack. However, these benefits do not always guarantee coverage. International violence is an important factor in travel insurance benefits and there may be coverage exclusions that travelers are not aware of.

Due to the greater risks associated with travel in some regions, many providers have added policy restrictions which void coverage in specific countries. For example, Seven Corners currently excludes coverage in 23 high-risk regions, including The Democratic Republic of Congo, North Korea, and Iraq. Similarly, Travelex does not cover travel to countries with U.S. travel restrictions, including Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria and Cuba.

?It is critical to pay attention to these coverage exclusions when purchasing a policy,? explains Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. ?If a claim is made for travel which took place in an excluded country, travelers must understand that a policy may not be honored.?

In addition to country exclusions, there are other restrictions to be aware of. Some policies include a ?terrorism? benefit which can be claimed if a terrorist attack occurs in a city specifically listed on a traveler?s itinerary. Travelers frequently seek out this benefit when traveling to areas with known violence. However, few are aware that some policies void this benefit if the attack occurs in a region where the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning. Depending on the provider, coverage is only available if the attack occurs during a traveler?s trip or if it happens within seven to thirty days of scheduled departure.

When purchasing a travel insurance policy with terrorism coverage, travelers should read certificates carefully and contact insurance providers with questions. Squaremouth representatives are available Monday through Friday, from 9am-9pm ET, to assist travelers with questions on any of the 250+ policies available on squaremouth.com.
