FAPAC Deputy Director Marilyn Egerton and Husband Eddie ...

Lifelong DC residents Marilyn and Eddie Egerton were named by DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton as Washington, DC?s 2012 Angels in Adoption. This honor, bestowed by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, honors individuals, couples, or organizations that have ?made an extraordinary contribution on behalf of children in need of homes.?

The Egertons? dedication to children is certainly significant: they have fostered more than three dozen young people. Sixteen children have become permanent parts of the Egerton family, four by adoption and twelve others to whom they have also made a lifetime commitment.

In her day job, Marilyn Egerton oversees the peer advocacy training, individual case management, and financial operations of the Foster and Adoptive Parent Advocacy Center (FAPAC), where she has been Deputy Director since 2003, but her round-the-clock first priority is to the children that she and her husband are helping to raise.

The Egertons will be honored in a ceremony on September 12 at the Ronald Reagan Building, alongside other Angels in Adoption from across the country. Celebrity honorees include actress Katherine Heigl and her singer/songwriter husband Josh Kelle, and People magazine. Musician Steven Curtis Chapman will provide entertainment at the event.

?I grew up with adoption and foster care. Several of my aunts were foster and adoptive parents. I decided as a kid that I wanted to foster when I grew up,? Marilyn said. She and her husband started fostering and just kept going. ?I adopted my kids because I loved them and we had become a family. I really wanted to give them some level of normalcy.?

Despite decades of sharing their home with others, Marilyn was still surprised to receive the award. ?When I found out about the award, I was shocked. There are so many foster and adoptive parents I work with who do incredible things every day. I am humbled.?
