I've known the Galls for years. My husband grew up with Stacy and Mike and they are one of the funniest, happy families I've ever met. The first time I went over to their house Stacy had a chalkboard sign in the entry advertising "Fall!" and her home looked and smelled like the season. I was in college and it was the warmest, most welcoming place I'd set foot in since leaving home.

Stacy lives and breathes style (and comedy), so three years ago when the Pineapple house was up for sale she knew she had to have it. For a very long time, its exterior was painted two shades of pink, and she would drive past and admire it daily. Since moving in, Stacy has unleashed her color powers on the Spanish Revival and risen to the domestic goddess level one can only dream of. Immersed in the area's rich history and bounty of historic homes, she is also vice president of the historic district board.

The Galls are committed to their community, and continually strive to make it a better place to live and raise children. Whether it's involvement in the local music scene, or running for local government, they realize and accept the social responsibility of making your community what you want it to be.

Our Style: I think our style is vintage mixed with a little modern, with a frenchy twist.

Inspiration: Kate Spade is a huge inspiration for me. I love her use of colors. It's quirky, but still classic.

Favorite Element: The entryway! It has a 12 foot ceiling, enough space for a fun chair and side table, a gothic hanging chandelier, and a winding staircase! I love the first impression it gives when friends come to visit!

Biggest Challenge: The style of our house is "Spanish Revival", and a common trait of these houses is textured walls, which took us forever to paint, and it makes me dream about all of the wallpaper that I will never have because it will never work!

What Friends Say: "I would never think of putting this together!" "Can you help me pick out paint colors?"

Biggest Embarrassment: Definitely our garden area. There is a huge garden carved out with bricks in our yard, and we are just now learning how to take care of it. I dream of being one of those ladies who wears a huge gardening hat and floral print gloves, and carries my coffee out in the morning to get to work out there? someday it will happen!

Proudest DIY: The paper wall art that is hanging above the fireplace! I got the idea from a friend that made one, and when I was finished I was SO PUMPED, I made a few more and gave them away! It was also the cheapest thing to make! (And we all know wall art can cost an arm and a leg!)

Biggest Indulgence: I would say the antique square grand piano that I bought from a Frank Lloyd Wright home in my neighborhood. The home is used for tours, and events, and they were selling it because they had a different piano being donated to them! It was my lucky day! ? but a bit of an indulgence. They are very rare, and the piano dates back to the late 1800's. I like to picture what some of the people who may have played it were wearing at the time!

Best Advice: Don't play it safe. Paint can be repainted if you don't like it, but the payoff is amazing when you do something risky and it turns out great! Also, style doesn't have to be expensive ? I think it's something we are all born with.

Iranian Supreme Leader slams UN, Israel

August 30, 2012

(JTA) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei slammed the United Nations Security Council and blasted Israel in a speech to the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran.

Khamenei made his remarks Thursday to delegates of the 120-member movement, as well as in front of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The remarks came a day after Khamenei met with Ban, who spoke to the supreme leader about making Iran's nuclear program more transparent and repairing Iran's human rights record. He also asked Iranian leaders to tone down the rhetoric on Israel, The New York Times reported.

Khamenei called the Israeli leadership "blood-thirsty wolves? in Thursday's speech. He has also called Israel, known as the Zionist entity, a cancer that needs to be excised from the body of the Middle East. He also deplored what he called the "overt dictatorship" of the Security Council.

Ban attended the summit despite strenuous objections from Israel, as well as from the United States and other Western nations.?

Khamenei also told the summit that Iran has never sought nuclear weapons, and plans to develop its nuclear energy program, calling the use of nuclear weapons ?a big and unforgivable sin, according to the Times.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi also addressed the summit Thursday, on the first visit to Iran by an Egyptian leader in more than 30 years.

During his speech, Morsi called for "reform in the Security Council in order for it to be more representative of the new world order of the 21st century and not a reflection of the 20th century."

He expressed Egypt's "solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy" and called for "a peaceful transition to a democratic system of rule that reflects the demands of the Syrian people for freedom."??

The Syrian delegation walked out during these remarks, Al-Jazeera reported.

Morsi also reiterated his Muslim Brotherhood-backed party's support for a Palestinian state and called for "a comprehensive solution that will support the right of the Palestinian people to decide their own future and to establish their free state on their own soil."

Lunar 'hit-and-run': New research eclipses existing theories on formation of the moon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Moon is believed to have formed from a collision, 4.5 billion years ago, between Earth and an impactor the size of Mars, known as "Theia." Over the past decades scientists have simulated this process and reproduced many of the properties of the Earth-Moon system; however, these simulations have also given rise to a problem known as the Lunar Paradox: the Moon appears to be made up of material that would not be expected if the current collision theory is correct.

A recent study published in Icarus proposes a new perspective on the theory in answer to the paradox.

If current theories are to be believed, analyses of the various simulations of the Earth-Theia collision predict that the Moon is mostly made up of material from Theia. However, studying materials from both Earth and the Moon, shows remarkable similarities. In fact, elements found on the Moon show identical isotopic properties to those found on Earth.

Given it is very unlikely that both Theia and Earth had identical isotopic compositions (as all other known solar system bodies, except the Moon, appear to be different) this paradox casts doubt over the dominant theory for the Moon formation. Moreover, for some elements, like Silicon, the isotopic composition is the result of internal processes, related to the size of the parent body. Given Theia was smaller than Earth, its Silicon isotope composition should have definitely been different from that of Earth's mantle.

A group of researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland, have now made a significant breakthrough in the story of the formation of the Moon, suggesting an answer to this Lunar Paradox. They explored a different geometry of collisions than previously simulated, also considering new impacts configurations such as the so-called, "hit-and-run collisions," where a significant amount of material is lost into space on orbits unbound to Earth..

"Our model considers new impact parameters, which were never tested before. Besides the implications for the Earth-Moon system itself, the considerably higher impact velocity opens up new possibilities for the origin of the impactor and therefore also for models of terrestrial planet formation," explains lead author of the study, Andreas Reufer.

"While none of the simulations presented in their research provides a perfect match for the constraints from the actual Earth-Moon-system, several do come close," adds Alessandro Morbidelli, one of the Icarus' Editors. "This work, therefore, suggests that a future exhaustive exploration of the vast collisional parameter space may finally lead to the long-searched solution of the lunar paradox."

National Retirement Fund exemption

28 August 2012 Tonga Power Limited (TPL) Exempted from the National Retirement Benefits Fund (NRBF) and no longer a registered member effective from 3 August 2012. TPL Employer and Employee representative terminates.

The NRBS Act 2010 sets up a retirement fund scheme for its members. Whilst the scheme of the Act is for compulsory contribution by members there is provision for exemption from the provisions of the Act. The exemption is predicated on the employer providing the same or a better retirement benefit for its employees.

Tonga Power Limited applied to be exempted and NRBF Board approved the application after due process for exemption by TPL effective from 3 August 2012. The constitution of the Board is by law to be made up of persons representing employee and employer members of the Scheme.

The Term of Office for elected representatives is three years but terminates earlier if the representative ceases to be a registered employer or employee. TPL is no longer a registered member and TPL's employer and employee elected representatives cease.

NRBF Board wishes to convey its appreciation to the former employer and employee representatives of TPL on its Board, Mr. William Edwards Jr. and Mr. Steven ?Esau for their important contribution during their time on the Board.

So who really builds America's businesses? Is it entrepreneurs? Or is it the government?

The real answer is neither, and I'll get to that in a moment.

The whole issue of "who built that" blew up when Fox News and a bunch of Republican bloggers decided to twist one of President Obama's quotes. Here's what he actually said:

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet."

Let this be a lesson to all writers out there about the danger of using pronouns. Rephrase your words to avoid unfocused pronouns if you want to avoid this type of problem. From the context of the president's speech, it's pretty clear that President Obama was referencing "this unbelievable American system" and "roads and bridges" when he said that you didn't build "that." When reporting on the speech, the president's opponents dropped those preceding sentences, though, to make it appear that the president instead was referencing "you've got a business" when he said "you didn't build that."

Since this incident first blew up last month, the president's supporters have counter-attacked by pointing out every instance when someone hitting the president over this line accepted or benefited from some government program. When the Republicans planned a "We Build It" theme for their convention, writers noted that the Republicans' schedule speaker, Maryland entrepreneur Sher Valenzuela, actually built her business using $17 million in government loans and contracts.

But I don't care if someone finds an entrepreneur who started a business that accepted no government loans and no government contracts. I don't even care if that business doesn't use the Internet or any other government-funded or supported technology. No matter how independent an entrepreneur might be, there is no business on Earth that was built solely by its owner.

That's because owners don't build businesses. Customers do.

No business owner ever made a dime of income without customers. Banks might give you loans. Investors might hand you money in exchange for shares of the company. But no one makes any income if customers don't spend.

When you go out shopping, you're building businesses with your dollars. You are deciding, with your spending, which businesses will be able to pay their bills, hire new workers, donate money to their communities, and have enough money left over after expenses to deliver profits to their owners. Without people like you spending money, businesses won't have the income to pay those bills, hire new workers, donate to worthy causes, or give their owners any profit. Without customers, no businesses get built - and I don't care how their owners vote.

That's why it steams me to hear Republicans trot out business owners such as Valenzuela who take credit for their business' success. Smart business owners give credit where it's really due - to their customers.

I don't want to spend my money to build a business owned by someone who believes he's entitled to my cash. I want to spend my money building up business owners who take care of my needs - who deliver solid value in return for my dollars. I want to build businesses run by people who believe in customer service.

People who practice great customer service don't think short-term. They take a long view, starting from before a potential customer even thinks about walking into their stores. Great business owners know that not only must they provide something that meets their customers' needs, but that their customers also must feel comfortable and secure enough to make that purchase.

If you're business owner who really sees the long view, you know that you won't be able to attract customers when they're worried about losing their jobs. Or not being able to afford anything after paying their bills. Or when people can't get to your store because the local government cut its budget and won't pay to plow the streets in winter, repair them in the spring, or run enough buses throughout the year. You know that the financial health of your entire community determines how many customers will walk through your door.

So that's why you pay a living wage to your employees. That's why you give to the local public schools. That's why you pay your taxes, and don't look for every obscure loophole to get out of paying a fair share.

And that's why when some selfish business owner down the block starts yapping about how he built his own business thanyouverymuch, you sigh and tell the staff to get ready. Because that selfish loudmouth just showed how little he thinks about his customers. Which means that, maybe, a few of them might decide to spend their money to build your business instead.

Janak Communications Updates: National Peace Conference ...

A two day National Peace Conference on Elections begins today August 27, 2012 at the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi.? hundreds of delegates drawn from all the 47 Counties streamed into Nairobi yesterday ahead of the event which will this morning be opened by President Mwai Kibaki.

The event seeks to focus public attention on the need to realize a free, fair and peaceful elections due next year on March 4, if the endless court litigation over the date do not torpedo the process.

"Pwani" Delegates register. They were keen to participate in the conference despite Mombasa Republican's (MRC) call for all residents of the Coast to ignore or boycott anything being by the Kenya government.?

Delegates from South Rift call their families back home to assure them they are safe after after reports came that some delegates -from Busia died in an early morning accident near Naivasha.

There was little activity at this desk but the delegates later arrived and were registered.

Fed may struggle to deliver expected growth boost

LONDON (Reuters) - It's the end of August, so all eyes will again be on the small Wyoming resort town of Jackson -- population 9,577 -- to see whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke fuels or dampens hopes of fresh monetary easing to lift the U.S. economy.

The annual Jackson Hole summer retreat hosted by the Kansas City Fed has become a highlight of the global central banking calendar.

Expectations this year have not soared to the heights of 2010 or 2011, but equity and commodity prices have been rising and could react badly if the U.S. central bank chief pulls his punches.

After all, "many" Fed policymakers judged at their August 1 meeting that extra easing would probably be warranted fairly soon in the absence of signs of a "substantial and sustainable" economic recovery, according to the minutes of their deliberations.

Yet some economists reckon not even a third round of Fed asset purchases would do much to perk up world growth.

For a start, bond yields are already very low and the Fed has already said it expects short-term rates to remain close to zero at least until late 2014. The law of diminishing returns is at work.

Above all, buying more U.S. Treasuries or mortgage-backed securities would do nothing to address the euro zone's underlying problems or wean China off its dependence on an investment boom that looks unsustainable, said Julian Jessop with Capital Economics, a London consultancy.

"These, and not the health of the U.S. financial system, are now the biggest challenges facing the global economy," he said.

So whereas China's July exports to the United States were flat from a year earlier and shipments to Southeast Asia rose briskly, those to the European Union plunged 16 percent. As a result, total exports edged up just 1 percent.

"Most of the deceleration in export growth is explained by the European crisis," said Joy Yang, an economist for Mirae Asset Management in Hong Kong.

That's why markets will be glued not only to Bernanke's speech on Friday but also to policy signals from the euro zone ahead of a September 6 meeting of the European Central Bank.

WAITING FOR DETAILS

Investors want the ECB to flesh out President Mario Draghi's promise to "do what it takes" to preserve the single currency despite a collapse of confidence in the capacity of the likes of Spain and Italy to tame their debts.

That evaporation of trust is weighing on the euro zone economy, which is set to shrink this quarter, polls of purchasing executives suggest. Germany's closely watched IFO survey, due on Monday, is likely to confirm the deteriorating trend.

By contrast, economists polled by Reuters expect revised U.S. gross domestic product data on Wednesday to show the economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annualized pace in the second quarter, up from an initial estimate of 1.5 percent.

The Fed has made plain its dissatisfaction with such tepid growth; the U.S. unemployment rate has fallen to just 8.3 percent from 9.1 percent in July 2011.

But markets are split on what policy steps Bernanke will flag. Many economists expect the Fed will promise to hold short-term rates extremely low for even longer while keeping the option of further asset purchases in reserve for now.

It's hard to see how that would be a game-changer for the rest of the world.

Indeed, bond strategists at Deutsche Bank said developments in the U.S. housing market and in credit conditions were already consistent with slightly above-trend growth; they said their key source of concern was a slowdown in Asia.

On that score, Yang at Mirae said China, Asia's powerhouse, might feel more comfortable in relaxing its own monetary policy if the Fed moved first.

But she said the key to a short-term recovery in growth was faster domestic investment. Yet project approvals were being held up by the approaching turnover in China's central leadership and the accompanying churn of provincial officials.

"Even if the U.S. started to ease more aggressively, the binding constraint on the fiscal side is the new leadership," she said. "Everything is waiting for the political transition."

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac bore down on Haiti's southern peninsula early Saturday, threatening a city prone to flooding and dousing other areas of the poor nation still trying to recover from the terrible 2010 earthquake.

The storm swirled past the southern coast of the neighboring Dominican Republic on Friday, dropping heavy rain on that country and on Haiti. Forecasts put it on a path over eastern Cuba and on to the Gulf of Mexico, with it still posing a potential threat to Florida as a hurricane just as the Republicans gather for their national convention.

Forecasters said Isaac could dump as much as eight to 12 inches (30 centimeters) and even up to 20 inches (51 centimeters) on Hispaniola, which is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic, as well as produce a storm surge of up to 3 feet (0.9 meters).

There was a potential for deadly flash floods and mudslides in Haiti because so much of the country is deforested. Tropical storms in the past have killed thousands.

"That kind of rain is going to cause some life-threatening flash floods and mudslides," said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami.

Communications in Haiti are often spotty and there were no official reports of any damage by late Friday.

Government and international aid groups in Haiti's capital had been prepared on Friday to evacuate several thousand people from settlement camps that sprang up after the 2010 earthquake. But the main threat appeared aimed at Les Cayes, a city of about 45,000 people on the southwestern coast that is prone to flooding during heavy rain.

Isaac was centered about 55 miles (85 km) south-southwest of Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, late Friday, and its maximum sustained winds had increased to 70 mph (110 kph). It was moving west at 13 mph (2 kph). Tropical force winds extended nearly 200 miles (321 kilometers) from the storm's center.

Cuba declared a state of alert Friday for six eastern provinces, according to a Civil Defense announcement read on the afternoon news, and five central provinces were put on preliminary watch. Vacationers in tourist installations of those regions were evacuated.

Radio Baracoa, from the city of Baracoa on the northern coast of eastern Cuba, reported that high seas began topping the city's seawall Friday night. Reports said lower than normal rains had left reservoirs well below capacity and in good shape to absorb runoff.

Cuba has a highly organized civil defense system that goes door-to-door to enforce evacuations of at-risk areas, largely averting casualties from storms even when they cause major flooding and significant damage to crops.

In Port-au-Prince, a city of some 3 million ringed by mountains, people went to work as usual Friday, but commercial banks closed at noon and some residents took precautions as the sky darkened, rain fell and the wind picked up.

"Just in case this gets very bad ? the sky is turning gray ? I'm making sure we have enough food in the house," 25-year-old Joanne Dorville said as she carried home rice, sardines, black beans and cooking oil that she bought at a street market.

Haitian authorities and aid workers from the International Organization for Migration and the Haitian Red Cross had planned on Friday to evacuate as many as 8,000 people from a tent camp at the edge of the capital but few accepted. Two school buses that were supposed to shuttle the people to temporary shelters drove away empty.

"If I leave for a shelter, by the time I come back, everything I have will be gone," said Charles Delizaire, a 39-year-old resident of the settlement named Marassa.

More than a hundred people were at a shelter in a school that President Michel Martelly toured along with Lamothe, the prime minister. Martelly greeted mothers and their children, but after the visit some people began to leave.

"They dragged me from the camp and brought me here," 38-year-old Marlene Charles, thirsty and hungry, said about the aid groups. "There's no way I'm going to spend the night here."

In the Dominican Republic, authorities evacuated people from low-lying areas but, as in Haiti, they encountered resistance. Still, authorities said they evacuated nearly 2,900 people. The majority were transferred to the homes of relatives while about 300 were sent to government shelters.

Flooding was reported in Santo Domingo and Santiago but no reports of injuries.

Organizers of next week's Republican National Convention in Tampa were monitoring storm developments, and authorities said there were no plans to cancel the convention.

Out in the eastern Atlantic, former Tropical Storm Joyce degenerated into a weak low pressure system Friday.

Rautio is only the fifth chief executive to be named at Carlson in its 74-year history.

LONDON (Reuters) - British factory orders slumped to the lowest level since December 2011 in August, as demand for consumer goods dropped, the CBI's monthly industrial trends survey showed on Tuesday.

The Confederation of British Industry survey's total order book balance fell to -21 this month from -6 in July, well below economists' expectations of a reading of -8.

The export order book balance fell to -17, the lowest since January, from -9 in July.

The figures dampen hopes that British manufacturing is picking up after a dismal second quarter, during which it fell by 0.9 percent, in part because of an extra public holiday to mark the Queen's 60 years on the throne.

"Overall demand for manufactured goods has eased back this month, led by a weakening in the consumer goods sector, following a strong July figure," said Anna Leach, CBI's head of economic analysis.

"This sector also contributed to the weakening in output expectations for the next three months, alongside investment goods.

"The economic environment for UK manufacturers remains challenging, with domestic demand relatively muted, and the ongoing euro zone crisis now seeming to drag on broader global economic momentum," she added.
