In his first interview since being fired by Current TV, Keith Olbermann told David Letterman on The Late Show Tuesday that “I screwed up really big.”

Obama: Reagan could not survive in 'radical' GOP

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In combative campaign form, President Barack Obama accused Republican leaders on Tuesday of becoming so radical and dangerously rigid that even the late Ronald Reagan, one of their most cherished heroes, could not win a GOP primary if he were running today.

Obama, in a stinging speech to an audience of news executives, had unsparing words for Republicans on Capitol Hill as well as the man he is most likely to face off against in November, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. The president depicted the election as a choice between a Democratic candidate who wants to use government to help people succeed and Republicans who would abandon a basic compact with society and let most people struggle at the expense of the rich.

He framed his address around a new House Republican budget plan, saying it represents a bleak, backward "radical vision."

"It is thinly veiled social Darwinism," Obama said to the annual meeting of The Associated Press. "It is antithetical to our entire history as a land of opportunity and upward mobility for everybody who's willing to work for it ... It is a prescription for decline."

Republicans shot back that the president had offered a deeply partisan speech devoid of accountability.

Campaigning outside Milwaukee just before Obama spoke, Romney said that the president "of course will look for someone else to blame." The Republican Party chairman, Reince Priebus, said Obama had abandoned his hope-and-change campaign slogan of four years ago. Said Priebus: "All along, he's been a cold, calculating, big-spending politician."

Obama's speech removed any doubt that the general election was under way for the president, despite his professed reluctance to weigh in before Republicans settle on a nominee.

He took a couple of digs at Romney, playing up the Republican presidential front-runner's support for a budget-slashing plan the House has approved.

That plan is doomed to die in the Senate, but Obama held it up as a sign of the disaster that would come if Republicans got their way: poor children not getting food, grandparents unable to afford nursing homes, more airline flights getting canceled and weather forecasts becoming less reliable.

For Obama, it was the latest in a string of efforts to get his message out just as voters were going to the polls to help pick his opponent, this time in primaries Tuesday in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Romney is on a pace to clinch the nomination by the end of the primary season in June.

By invoking Reagan, a beloved Republican, Obama sought to take GOP charges of Obama extremism and turn them back on the party. He cited a presidential debate in the current campaign in which the entire field of Republican candidates rejected the idea of $10 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax hikes if that were offered in a debt-reduction deal.

"Ronald Reagan, who, as I recall, is not accused of being a tax-and-spend socialist, understood repeatedly that when the deficit started to get out of control ? that for him to make a deal ? he would have to propose both spending cuts and tax increases," Obama said. "He could not get through a Republican primary today."

Obama, in fact, managed to mention and associate his thinking with six Republican presidents, from Abraham Lincoln to George W. Bush.

By contrast, he portrayed today's opposition leadership as abandoning centrist positions and compromise.

"We have to think about our fellow citizens, with whom we share a community," Obama said. "This sense of responsibility to each other and our country, this isn't a partisan feeling. This isn't a Democratic or a Republican idea; it's patriotism."

The House budget proposal is led by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., a Romney supporter. It aims to slash the deficit and the size of government while offering sharply lower tax rates in return for eliminating many popular tax breaks. Obama offered a blow-by-blow critique of it, warning his audience at the start to "bear with me."

When he was finished, House Speaker John Boehner said, "The president has resorted to distortions and partisan potshots."

The president also sought to influence media coverage in speaking to publishers and editors from around the country. He said the fact that the two parties are fighting does not mean they are equally to blame, and that Republicans have shown they will not budge.

"This bears on your reporting," Obama told the journalists.

Asked about the fate of his health care reform law, his signature legislative achievement, Obama said his administration was "not spending a whole lot of time planning for contingencies" in the event that the law is struck down. He said he expected the Supreme Court to uphold the law as constitutional because justices "take their responsibilities very seriously."

Making the case for a second term, Obama said the central question of the election will be how to restore security for Americans who work hard and show responsibility.

"That's why I ran in 2008," he said. "It's what my presidency has been about. It's why I'm running again."

A third reason some men cheat on their wives is because the opportunity presents itself. Some men are narcissistic and only care about themselves. An innocent flirtation becomes a full fledged affair. It could be when they?re alone on a business trip or it might be an ex girlfriend or ex wife that suddenly contacts them out of the blue. Decistor: Lost Vessel [Sci-fi]

"In the distant future the influence of humanity is stretched throughout the stars, where dozens of systems make up the loose comglomerate known as the Allied Colonies. Seventy-nine years ago a civil war spread through the Colonies and tore them apart, scattering the remnants of humanity throughout space. In a war that has expanded to engulf every system in known space, entire generations have been sacraficed. All those who witnssed the first terrifying shots of the war have long since perished and now no-one knows how, or why, it began. They fight persists though, and every year sees humanity grow more desperate as they struggle not only to end the war, but to come to terms with what it has cost them.

Weakened and demoralised the remnants of the Allied Colonies launched a desperate mission deep into enemy territory in a last-ditch attempt to bring an end to the war. Only a skeletal defence forced remained behind to protect the worlds still within Colonial borders; every other military-class vessel was ordered to make the jump to the Oberu System to strike at the main enemy flotilla and oust the government in place there. Casulties where high and more lives were lost in a single battle than had been lost in many years of conflict, but, victory was theres. The enemy flotilla, caught off-guard, had been annihilated and the Allied Colonies had snatched a chance of ending the war from the jaws of defeat. Though few believe it, there may finally be an opportunity to re-unite the scattered systems of humanity and reclaim the honour of their ancestors.

Battered, bruisers but victories the Colonial Second Fleet is set to return to friendly space for maintenance and repairs whilst Colonial Fleet One remains behind to ensure order in the turbulent aftermath of the battle. ACV Decistor is a battleship assigned to the triumphant Second Fleet. The ship took extensive damage during the battle and is making the final preparations to jump back to Colonial space. Aboard the crew are celebrating what they believe is an end to a war that has been waged ever since they were born. Celebration is to be short-lived. When the ship exists Jump they find that they are alone. Stranded, the Decistor is to discover that they have jumped beyond the Yellow Box and into uncharted space.

This story will follow the crew of the Decistor as they are faced with an impossible situation. One that will test their resolve, and push them to limits far exceeding what they were trained for."

This roleplay is going to be a realistic roleplay set in the future, where humanity has discovered interstellar travel and has colonised numerous systems. The collection of human systems is fomally known as the 'Allied Colonies' but has been embroiled in a bitter war lasting for almost eight decades. Whilst this story will follow the crew of a single ship in this universe, it is my hope that the players can create a backstory on which our saga can unravel. This roleplay will focus on the characters. Whilst there will be events that drive the story forwards on its path, almost everything that happens will be a result of the crews actions. I want this story to not be about battles, weapons and violence, but instead to focus on the people. The story is going to contain those elements but they should not be its focus.

As mentioned previously, the players in this roleplay are going to have opportunity to shape the universe in which this roleplay is set. The crew of the Decistor are going to be made up of people from all over the Allied Colonies. It is my intention that players get to create the Colony from which their character comes. No real detail is needed at first but as the story progresses these back-stories can interweave and provide texture for the characters. Whilst the Allied Colonies will share one government and federal law, each colony will differ in things such as culture and local tradition, and law. Despite being military, as time passes these differences or similarities are going to become focal points around which the crew interact.

The ship on which the roleplay will be taking part is a military-class vessel, and as such the vast majority of the perosnnel aboard should be military in nature. Civillians will be allowed but only if they have legitimate reasons for being aboard such a vessel during a major fleet engagment in enemy territories. Maintenance crew, crew cooks and the like can be classed 'civillian' in nature, but will be enlisted in the military in some degree. With this in mind, submitted characters may come from any part of the ships crew and may be of any reasonable rank for their station, and the roleplays parameters (we can't have fifty Captains, for example).

A number of characters will be required before the roleplay can begin. These are:

1. Captain, ACV Decistor - I will not be playing the ships Captain. My intentions are to present scenarios to the Captain and allow their character to make the final decision on what direction to take. As such, this is a position of high responsibility both as a character and a participating player. The Captain can be of any rank but must be at least a Commander. They may have any character achetypes and be whoever the players chooses, but: they must intend getting the ship to Colonial space; whilst they may be unpopular they should not be at a point where open mutiny is likely to occur. (Probably a GM for the roleplay)

2. Executive Officer, ACV Decistor - The player tasked with being second-in-command of the ship. This character will aid the Captain in making decisions on the ships fate, and may tend to take more of a hand in dealing with perosnal matters within the crew. The executive officer can be any rank but must be at least a Lieutenant Commander, and cannot be of the same rank as the Captain.

3. Captain, Fighter Pilots - I will require a player to play the lead member of the fighter pilots. He will be required to plan battle strategies, recruit and train new pilots and deal with personal matters within the pilots. This character must be be either a Sub-Lieutenant or Lieutenant. All pilots other than this character will be Petty Officers or below. {May alter to Air Force equivilants]

4. Crew - Crew are more important than the above roles, and will form the meat of the roleplay. They will be filling every role from the maintenance of the ships propulsion systems to the preparation of food throughout the day. Heads of various departments should be Leading Hands. The majority of the crew should otherwise be Able Seaman. Higher ranks will be approved if legitimate. Ships are not expected to be flooded with commissioned officers, but these rolls will be open to players. Promotions for characters are possible.

Any questions or suggestions, go ahead and ask. I really haven't planned out much of the back-story beyond what is written here. I'd rather it be a collaborative effort so that every participant has an opportunity to create something in which they are going to invest their time.

Art is "world's greatest currency", says Hirst

LONDON (Reuters) - Some artists prefer not to talk about the value of their work. Damien Hirst clearly revels in it, going so far as to call art "the greatest currency in the world".

On the eve of Hirst's first major retrospective in his native Britain, he hit back at a leading critic who dismissed him as a conman and advised anyone owning his work to sell it fast.

Julian Spalding, a curator and critic who has just written a short book called "Con Art - Why you ought to sell your Damien Hirsts while you can", went on the attack last week with articles in at least two national newspapers.

They were designed to coincide both with the release of his book and the opening this week of an exhibition at Tate Modern tracing Hirst's journey from a student at Goldsmiths College to the world's most commercially successful living artist.

Spalding questioned whether Hirst, known for his shark suspended in formaldehyde, a diamond-encrusted skull, spot paintings and medicine cabinets, was an artist at all and described his works, which fetch millions at auction, as "worthless financially".

Hirst, speaking on Monday to a small group of journalists at the Tate Modern gallery overlooking the river Thames, was clearly used to such jibes and brushed Spalding's criticism aside with a grin.

"It's like, you say 'sell your Hirst'. I say 'don't sell your Hirsts, hang on to them.' If you look at the numbers ...

"It's always healthy to have both views -- people love it, people hate it. I once said as long as they spell my name right I don't mind. As I've got older I don't really mind if they spell my name right either.

"Andy Warhol said that great thing didn't he? 'Don't read your reviews, weigh them'."

SMELL OF DECAY AND MONEY

The fact that Hirst quoted Warhol was hardly surprising -- both artists have been commercially canny and saw the value of their works as inextricably linked to the art itself.

Hirst's spot paintings, for example, are made by employees and untouched by the artist, a fact that did not prevent them becoming status symbols for the rich and famous.

The artist has come to embody the spirit of 1990s London where his works, often given intriguing titles, appealed to hedge fund managers and oligarchs as well as an art world clamoring for new ideas.

Championed early on by collector Charles Saatchi, Bristol-born Hirst personifies conspicuous consumption, yet the 46-year-old, with a fortune estimated at over 200 million pounds, insisted that the art came first.

"I'm one of those lucky artists that makes money in their lifetime, and makes lots of money," he said. "I'm not afraid of that but I think the goal's always been to make art and not money. Making money is a by-product, a very happy by-product.

"I think art's the greatest currency in the world. Gold, diamonds, art -- I think they are equal ... I think it's a great thing to invest in."

The show itself focuses on some of Hirst's most important early works with a view to putting his later series into context.

The first spot painting, for example, was made in 1986 and, instead of the precise grid of equally spaced, equally sized circles of different hues comes a slap-dash affair with paint dripping down a canvas of rows of irregular shapes.

Two years later Hirst conceived and curated the "Freeze" exhibition of his work and that of fellow students, an early and important step towards establishing him as the leading figure in the influential "Young British Artists" (YBA) movement.

By 1995 he was a famous artist, winning the coveted Turner Prize and, in his acceptance speech, reminding the world of his humble academic background and rebellious spirit.

"It's amazing what you can do with an E in A-Level art, a twisted imagination and a chainsaw," he said.

The chainsaw referred to "Mother and Child, Divided", a bisected cow and calf which went on display at the Turner show and provoked widespread criticism.

Another Hirst work featuring a rotting cow and bull was banned in New York because of fears it would "prompt vomiting among visitors".

It was leading U.S. dealer Larry Gagosian who showcased Hirst in the United States, presenting the "No Sense of Absolute Corruption" show in New York in 1996.

Hirst's mother encouraged his passion for drawing as an adolescent, but was less tolerant of his taste in music and fashion -- she melted one of his Sex Pistols albums into the shape of a fruit bowl, according to online biographies, and cut up his "bondage" trousers.

INSECT-O-CUTOR

Hirst's famous "pickled" shark, entitled "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living" stands in the middle of the Tate show, a reminder of how death has been a dominant theme throughout Hirst's 25-year career.

Also familiar will be cabinets filled with medicine and his "spin" and butterfly paintings, but new to many will be "In and Out of Love", a room in which butterflies hatch, live and die as the public passes through.

Visitors are asked to check they are not unwittingly carrying a part of the art work with them when they leave.

It shares some of the themes with "A Thousand Years" from 1990 in which maggots hatch inside a glass vitrine, develop into flies, feed on the severed head of a cow and meet their end on an "insect-o-cutor".

A whiff of decaying flesh escapes from the glass container, to go with the odor of stale cigarette butts in his giant ash-tray "Crematorium" and the inescapable smell of money.

That is strongest towards the end of the show in a gold wallpapered room dedicated to Hirst's record-breaking auction at Sotheby's in 2008 where he raised 111 million pounds ($177 million) from over 200 new works.

Called "Beautiful Inside My Head Forever", it was a groundbreaking event, conceived as a single work of art that bypassed the dealers -- and their hefty fees -- altogether.

The Golden Calf, a bull in formaldehyde adorned with horns, hooves and a disk above its head made of 18-carat gold, raised 10.3 million pounds alone.

In the Tate's gift shop is a limited edition plastic skull decorated in "household gloss" paint priced at 36,800 pounds, while a roll of Hirst-designed wallpaper cost 675 pounds.

There is also the chance to see his diamond-encrusted skull "For the Love of God" displayed in a blacked-out box in the cavernous Turbine Hall lit only by spotlights shining on the 8,601 flawless gems set in a platinum cast of a human skull.

The sculpture fetched the then equivalent of $100 million in 2007, when it sold to a consortium of investors that included Hirst himself.

The artist has long avoided a retrospective, deeming it "more OAP" (old age pensioner) than YBA and worrying that his life's work would "amount to nothing" once it went on display.

But Hirst finally accepted the idea and the exhibition is one of the highlights of the Cultural Olympiad which is based around this summer's Olympic Games in London.

"I feel honored to be given this slot and hopefully I've done it justice," he said. "I definitely hope that more people walk away liking it than hating, but I'm not under any illusions that everyone's going to love it."
