PIERMONT, N.Y. (AP) ? A day after a bride-to-be was pulled dead from the Hudson River, the body of her fiance's best man was found a mile downstream Sunday, the second victim of a nighttime crash involving a speedboat and a barge north of New York City.
The deadly collision left the groom-to-be grieving for his intended and his best friend, while facing surgery for his own injuries as another friend is charged with manslaughter ? two weeks before the wedding day.
"I don't think you can put words to what we have to tell these families," Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said as he announced that a body believed to be that of Mark Lennon, 30, the best man, was found Sunday morning.
At the church where Lindsey Stewart and Brian Bond, both 30, would have been married Aug. 10, the pastor said their lives "were filled with hopes and dreams, and that has been snuffed away."
Stewart, Bond, Lennon and three others were on a speedboat that crashed Friday night into a barge holding equipment for the construction of a replacement for the Tappan Zee.
The group had left the village of Piermont for a short trip aboard the 21-foot Stingray across the river to Tarrytown, about 30 miles north of New York City, authorities said.
Police said it was being piloted by Jojo John, 35, of Nyack, whom they suspect was intoxicated and who has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault.
Stewart and Lennon were thrown off the boat. When the bodies were found, they did not have life vests on, said Sheriff's Department Chief William Barbera.
Bond, John and two others, whose names have not been made public because they are witnesses, were injured and hospitalized.
One of the witnesses has been released from the hospital, Falco said Sunday. Mitchell Turk, a friend of Bond's family, said Bond would be undergoing surgery on Monday.
Turk, of Orangetown, said he visited with Bond's mother on Sunday at her Pearl River home.
"It's sad and quiet there, long faces," he said. "They're trying to carry on, doing as well as can be expected. I'm a little shaken. When you think of what they've lost, a daughter-in-law, Brian injured, it's tough."
Turk's daughter, Sheryl Palacio, said she has known Bond, an art teacher, all her life.
"He's an outstanding teacher, a wonderful, kind, respectful man," she said.
She said Lennon was Bond's best friend and John was "his other best friend." She described the suspect as "a good man, happy and loving."
She said John "would never, ever want to put his friends in danger."
"I just hope Brian is able to move past this," she added.
It was not clear if John had an attorney. Falco said a mug shot of John released Sunday was from a previous arrest, but he would not elaborate.
At Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Pearl River, where Stewart and Bond had planned to get married, the Rev. John Havrilla said he remembered them as children. He told The Journal News that Stewart, who worked for an insurance company, was an important part of the congregation.
"Her loss, and the wedding, just makes this even more of a heartache," he said.
Falco said the body believed to be Lennon's was discovered by a person on a recreational watercraft who then called 911. Twelve search boats were on the water at the time. The county medical examiner will have to officially identify both bodies but police feel sure they are Stewart's and Lennon's.
The sheriff said the barge's lighting would be part of the investigation of the crash. Authorities have said the barge was equipped with lights, but it was still difficult to see on the water late at night.
A spokesman for the $3.9 billion bridge project said the barges were properly lit Friday night, but lighting has since been added.
"We will determine if those barges were lit properly and if it was a factor," Falco said.
Pre-construction work related to the new bridge was suspended for the weekend but is to resume Monday.

The 2007 world 100m and 200m champion was recently suspended after failing an out-of-competition test and immediately withdrew from next month's World Championships in Moscow.
The news came as quite a shock to all those involved in athletics and was further compounded when rival Asafa Powell also returned a positive test.
It is has now been confirmed that Gay's B-sample also contained the same banned substance and he now faces a ban of up to two years.
"We can confirm that the B sample analysis of a sample collected from Mr Gay has been completed, and that the B sample analysis has confirmed the A sample findings," USADA chief executive officer Travis Tygart said in a statement. "An additional sample collected from Mr Gay has also returned an adverse A sample finding.
"We appreciate Mr Gay voluntarily removing himself from competition prior to the World Championships while we evaluate the circumstances surrounding his adverse analytical findings and work towards achieving a fair resolution of his case in accordance with the rules."

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, said in an interview with TechRadar that Microsoft has actually tried to use Windows 8 as the foundation of a bold transition, so it's no wonder that so many people are criticizing it.
"Microsoft has clearly articulated a design vision that's designed to expand across platforms," he said. "As much criticism as the [Windows 8] has taken, I have to agree with them. It recognizes it needs to make a bold foundation. It's very difficult to make bold transitions like that without tickling somebody's nose hairs."
Numbers, on the other hand, speak for themselves. Windows 8 is currently installed on around 5 percent of computers worldwide more than six months after launch, while Steve Ballmer has reportedly admitted that the OS isn't selling well enough.
Now all eyes are on Windows 8.1, as the OS update is said to make the platform much more familiar in order to boost sales and help the software take off. RTM is prepared for August, while general availability will be announced at a later date.

Around 5,800 more cancer patients a year will now benefit from new, state-of-the-art forms of radiotherapy thanks to the Radiotherapy Innovation Fund1, but a long-term commitment from the government is vital for further improvements.
In just six months, the Government?s ?23 million fund ? allocated by Cancer Research UK and the Department of Health with support from radiotherapy professional bodies - has vastly increased the number of patients having access to Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), a more advanced form of the treatment.
In August 2012 fewer than 14 per cent of patients receiving radiotherapy were given IMRT2. But by April this year that figure had risen to over 22 per cent - although this still falls short of achieving the 24 per cent target set out in 2009 by the National Radiotherapy Implementation Group and by the Prime Minister when launching the Fund.
Cancer Research UK has called for a long term commitment from the government to fulfil the Prime Minister?s ambition that all cancer patients will have access to the most effective radiotherapy for their cancer.
And experts now believe that the goal should be for 50 per cent of patients needing advanced radiotherapy to be given IMRT.
IMRT uses complex physics to shape the radiotherapy beam so it closely matches the outline and position of the tumour. This means that the tumour gets the highest dose of radiotherapy while the surrounding area of tissue receives a much lower one.
The complexity of planning IMRT means that it takes longer to organise and needs updated equipment and extra training for staff to carry out. The Fund has meant hospitals can upgrade their equipment and given them the ability to carry out the detailed planning that?s needed for IMRT. ???
Dr Adrian Crellin, a consultant clinical oncologist and co-chair of the National Radiotherapy Implementation Group when the Fund was established, said: ?The Radiotherapy Innovation Fund has given a huge boost to the radiotherapy community and has meant that patients can benefit from more advanced treatments. Before the Fund was available many patients were missing out on a radiotherapy treatment that could increase their chances of survival and reduce side effects.
?More patients are now seeing the benefits of IMRT and it?s vital that radiotherapy services in the UK aren?t allowed to stagnate again but continue to improve.?
Research suggests that radiotherapy is second only to surgery in beating cancer, around four in 10 patients whose cancer is cured receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment.
Cancers benefitting from advanced radiotherapy that this Fund has helped facilitate include prostate, gynaecological, lung and head and neck tumours.
The ?23 million Radiotherapy Innovation Fund is a collaboration supported by the Department of Health, Cancer Research UK, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, the National Cancer Action Team, Royal College of Radiologists and the Society and College of Radiographers.
Sarah Woolnough, Cancer Research UK?s executive director of Policy and Information, said: ?The Radiotherapy Innovation Fund has shown what a huge difference this important investment in radiotherapy can have for cancer patients. In just six months we?ve increased the number of patients who can be given IMRT by almost two-thirds and have taken the first steps to changing radiotherapy services in the UK for the better.
?But we?re still a long way from fulfilling the Prime Minister?s ambition that all cancer patients should have access to the most effective radiotherapy for their cancer. As newer and better radiotherapy treatments become available, the NHS must be in a position to offer them to cancer patients.? ???

Initially characterized as a ?blockbuster,? the truth is that it?s worth far less than the $20 million-per-year contracts signed in 2012 by Drew Brees and earlier this year by Joe Flacco.
Some view the five-year, $76.5 million package as too light, with an annual average of $15.3 million.? Some view the deal as too heavy, given that Stafford has yet to establish himself as a durable, short-list franchise quarterback.? (Indeed, ESPN?s Ron Jaworski recently put Stafford at No. 16 on Jaworski?s annual ranking of starting quarterbacks.)
Either way, it doesn?t matter.? Stafford?s current deal was driven in large part by the contract he signed in 2009.
Four years ago, the NFL had yet to implement a rookie wage scale.? His cap number already was north of $20 million for 2013, and he was due to earn $23.5 million over the next two years.? With a cap number that would have been $19.3 million in 2014, Stafford?s franchise tender for 2015 would have been $23.16 million.
Thus, if the Lions wanted to keep Stafford, they were going to pay him $46.16 million over the next three years.? He?ll now get roughly $43 million over the next three years.
But Stafford, if he were willing to push it (and to continue to accept the injury risk), could have opted for a year-to-year approach beyond 2014, with the franchise tenders in 2015, 2016, and 2017 quickly spiraling out of control.? Under the labor deal, Stafford would have made $27.792 million in 2016 and $40.02 million in 2017.
That works out to $113.972 million over five years, or $37.475 million more than the total value of his new five-year deal.
The difference is that Stafford had no (or at least minimal) remaining guarantees on his rookie contract.? If he suffered a catastrophic injury, he would have been out of luck.? Under the new contract, Stafford positions himself for more than $40 million guaranteed, to go with more than $50 million he already has earned.
Then there?s the competitive aspect.? By pushing his cap charges to the limit and beyond, Stafford would have made it harder for the Lions to put a team around him.
?I don?t play this game to get contracts,? Stafford said last month. ?I play this game to win games and that?s the way I?ve always felt about it.?
At that point, it was clear that Stafford wasn?t inclined to make a maximum cash grab, even though his rookie contract gave him that ability.? It?s the same rookie contract that has allowed him to get much more than some would say he deserves based on his overall performance to date.

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former Democratic congressman turned Big Apple mayoral candidate, is now thematically joined in his unceasing apology tour by disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D), who launched a petition drive this week to be city comptroller (the top financial officer).
Just two years after a sexting scandal forced him to resign his House seat, Mr. Weiner is hoping he?s logged enough time in the wilderness to re-earn his wife?s favor, make personal peace with his foibles, and, well, deserve the city?s top job. Mr. Spitzer, the one-time anti-Wall Street crusader felled by his dalliances with a prostitute, has spent the past five years gabbing on an ill-fated CNN talk show and writing op-eds. He seems to believe that he?s paid his penance and that New York needs his services, as well.
If Spitzer collects enough signatures?by Thursday, he and Weiner will be on the primary ballot in September.
The talking heads are hashing out the differences between the two men, as if the distance between their deeds ? Weiner used bad judgment but didn?t do anything illegal, Spitzer crossed the line,?they suggest ? provides insight about their fitness again to hold elected office. Why isn?t the chattering class instead evaluating if either man has spent his limited time on the periphery of the limelight doing any kind of work that reflects real character restoration or sincere public service?
Well, because it seems that the mere casting of ballots in their favor would be sign enough of both. Political rebirth as evidence of a new lease on life. If the public says you?re OK, you?re OK. In America today, it would appear that many of us don?t much care whether our public officials have the deepest character, the sturdiest morals. Only that they win ? or that they know how to negotiate their apologies deftly enough to communicate that they?re still winners.
Most recently, Weiner and Spitzer have former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) to thank for that. Cheating on his wife, lying about his whereabouts while doing said cheating, and embarking on an international tryst instead of running the state were not disqualifiers for voters there; they sent him to Congress in a special election this spring. Once, Sanford had national aspirations: How long before his name is added to the long list of Republicans likely to seek the party?s 2016 presidential nomination?
So, too, should the two New Yorkers tip their hats to former President Bill Clinton (survivor of the Monica Lewinsky scandal and related impeachment proceedings) and Sen. David Vitter, the Louisiana Republican whose telephone number was found in a D.C. madam?s book and who later apologized for a ?serious sin.?
Should his wife make another White House bid, Mr. Clinton could be a future first spouse. Their marriage endures, and, through his family?s foundation, he is an international philanthropic superstar. And Senator Vitter never stepped down: He was elected to a second term in 2010.
New York is just the current epicenter of the reality television world takeover of American politics. Weiner and Spitzer are not rewriting history. They?re just providing a rare ballot twofer. And the tabloids are jubilant! Spitzer?s announcement this week brought headline writers a new raison d'?tre.

While Weiner has seen his star rise anew ? recent polls suggest he has catapulted to the front of the pack of Democratic mayoral hopefuls ? New York residents seem divided about Spitzer.
"Too soon,'' Julia Mair, a documentary scriptwriter, told USA Today, as she walked past the media horde gathered Monday near Spitzer. "All these guys, they lie and they lie and they lie, and then they think we should trust them and give them another chance. Why should we think they're going to do anything different?''
Spitzer, for his part, is taking the forgiveness banner and running with it ? from network to cable, street corner to street corner.
?There is forgiveness in the public, whether that forgiveness will extend to any individual is always a separate and independent question,? Spitzer said Tuesday on "CBS This Morning." ?And I will have to make a case very different than any other person has made. I expect I will make it every day between now and the election, and I look forward to making it.?
On MSNBC?s "Morning Joe," Spitzer took the forgiveness-seeking one step further, stepping into rare ? real? ? emotional territory when asked personally how he?s different from who he was five or six years ago.
?A lot of pain, a lot of pain,? he said, his eyes filling with tears, his chin beginning to tremble. ?You go through that pain, you change.?
Ultimately, though, the voters will decide. "I'm sorry" will get Weiner and Spitzer only so far. And maybe in addition to assessing their merits, their qualifications for the offices they seek, and their character, New Yorkers will be faced with another soul-searching question: Does forgiveness allow for ticket splitting?

The senior pastor at one of Chicago?s most celebrated churches is back in the pulpit after a bout with prostate cancer.
Bishop Larry D. Trotter was diagnosed with cancer last March.
Today, Bishop Trotter used his own experience to kick start an awareness program to encourage men to get tested and if necessary, receive treatment, as well.
He called it a marriage of ministry and medicine.
Bishop Trotter introduced the coalition to the congregation.
It is made up of health officials from four major academic medical centers in Chicago, including Rush, where he was treated.

The former talk show host, who won legions of fans interviewing such greats as Muhammad Ali, Richard Burton and Emu, was diagnosed in May.
But the 78-year-old said he is confident of beating the disease and returning to full health.
He said: "It was a great shock, but I have been told to expect to make a full recovery.
"I had to start calling a few of my social engagements to tell them I couldn't do it - what do you say to them?
"When you are told you have something like cancer, it is a shock.
"But the cancer specialist said: 'I will assure you, you will not die of this.'
"I am concerned about it, of course, but I am not frightened of it."
Sir Michael is currently undergoing radiotherapy five times a week, and said he found the process free from pain and discomfort.
"If anything, it's boring.
"You have to lie there completely still, for six minutes.
"But I have had no side effects at all."
Sir Michael said the cancer is contained to his prostate, and that he should be "completely free" of the disease by August.
And he urged men to pay greater attention to their health in order to catch potential diseases early - with a simple test to check for prostate cancer.
"The test is if you can pee against a wall from 2ft, you haven't got it," he said.
"I don't want to trivialise it, but men know when there's a problem.
"I have been lucky, but men are silly about their health.
"Get it checked out - it might be something else."
Sir Michael's said he had no intention of letting cancer get in the way of his life.
"I'm 78 and I have had a good life," he said.
"When you get involved in this, you begin to understand the extraordinary work of those involved in treating cancer.
"You just sit and look at them in wonder. They do the most extraordinary things, and I am very grateful.
"I shall be around for a while yet, to the delight of my friends and the dismay of my enemies."

As he continues to assemble his staff, it appears as if Mayor Eric Garcetti is bringing together what can best be described as a coalition government, in an example of what happens when the incumbent is not running and the winner is able to draw from a variety of sources. Garcetti, so far, has taken on folks who worked for both former mayors Antonio Villaraigosa and James Hahn.
The Hahn administration influence is the strongest. Staffers who worked for Hahn and now on the Garcetti mayoral team include Deputy Mayor Doane Liu and spokesman Yusef Robb. Also said to be in the mix is Sarah Dusseault, a former Hahn adviser who worked as policy director for Garcetti when he was on the City Council. From Villaraigosa, those remaining in the mayor's office include spokeswoman Vicki Curry, Public Safety Deputy Mayor Eileen Decker, transportation aide Borja Leon and scheduling director Martha Preciado. And, if you want to go back that far, at one time former Councilwoman Jan Perry worked for former Mayor Richard Riordan on census issues, before winning her seat on the City Council.

Brad Sherman; Damian Carroll, district director for Councilman Paul Krekorian; and Jeff Ebenstein, a field deputy to Councilman Paul Koretz. Blumenfield also has a favorite in the race with Andra Hoffman, a Glendale City College faculty member. Two other Democrats are Daniel McCrory and Elizabeth Badger, while Republicans who have announced include engineer Chris Kolski and businesswoman Susan Shelley.
Monica Ratliff, the newest member of the LAUSD board, found herself right in the middle of the battle for board president last week. She was able to break with the board's tradition of launching into an automatic vote by getting the two candidates, Tamar Galatzan and Richard Vladovic, to explain what they would do as board president. "I was interested in what they had to say and to know who their choice for vice president would be and why," she said later. "I want to make sure that everything is transparent." Ratliff ended up voting for Vladovic, saying she was persuaded by his speech to promise more academic support for students and a better working relationship on the board.

Eternal flames mark only our most important shrines ? but nature has them aplenty. This one, burning behind a waterfall veil in Erie county, New York, has now been studied in detail.
Team leader Giuseppe Etiope of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome, Italy, says he has studied many eternal flames, but never one so beautiful.
The flames can arise in places where natural gas seeps continually from underground rocks. When the flow concentrates into a strong "macroseep" and ignites, the resulting flame need never go out.
The one in Erie County is 20 centimetres tall and burns about a kilogram of gas a day ? mostly methane, although it also contains the highest proportions of ethane and propane ever recorded in a natural seep. The chemistry of the gas revealed that its source is a known shale formation about 400 metres down.
Local tectonic events have "naturally fracked" the underlying rocks. The researchers suggest that such sites might present good opportunities for hydrocarbon exploration without resorting to artificial fracking.
Seepage of natural gas has important implications for the atmosphere too. Almost a third of the methane in air comes from natural sources: natural gas seeps and wetlands are the biggest.
Not all eternal flames are what they seem, though. The team investigated a flame in Pennsylvania that proved not natural at all ? it is probably an abandoned gas or oil well.

At the mention of Bourbon, our thoughts turn to Kentucky. Bourbon whiskey was declared to be a ?distinctive product of the United States? in a joint Congressional resolution issued on May 4, 1964, and the lawmakers went on to identify it as ?unlike any other type of alcoholic beverage, whether foreign or domestic.? It is widely regarded as the native American spirit, and is intimately connected to the history of the Bluegrass State.
Big House Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Bourbon is made in many other places, of course: New York and Colorado, Indiana and Illinois, Virginia and Missouri. A Bourbon produced in Livermore, California?in the middle of wine country?would catch the attention of most people. We?d have many questions about it: who makes it, why did they decide to make Bourbon in California, who inspired them, how does it differ from the Kentucky version.
Big House Bourbon yields few answers. A little research tells you that it?s owned by a company called Underdog Wine and Spirits, but there?s no mention of the spirit on Underdog?s web site. The name echoes another Underdog product, Big House wines, a brand originally made famous by Bonny Doon?s Randall Grahm before he decided to sell out. In fact, the site for Big House Bourbon is vaguely similar to the site for the wine of the same name, but less intricate in design. There?s a description of the fermentation process, and we?re told that the whiskey is aged for six years in new, charred American oak barrels. There are a lot of prison metaphors. There?s a section called Ink, which we might assume contains press reviews, but actually is a compilation of tattoos uploaded by fans of the brand (go figure).
Whether or not you?re from Kentucky, and regardless of whether you have a tattoo, Big House Bourbon is a very fine product. The nose is generous and spicy, perfumed with caramel, vanilla, pepper and spring flowers. It?s high-toned and spicy on the first sip, with the pepper notes dominating, giving way in the mid palate to caramel and butterscotch flavors. The finish is long, and the spirit overall is extremely well balanced; it comes in at 90 proof/45% ABV. The texture is light, the mouth feel is lively, and it is an undisputed bargain at $20. Cocktails range from the usual suspects (Manhattan and Old Fashioned) to more exotic proprietary creations (see below).
The nose of the Big House Tupelo Honey displays none of the forward sweetness you?d expect to find. It emerges on the palate, of course, where it resembles a candied Bourbon, and the honey lingers on the finish along vanilla with notes. It?s lighter than the regular Bourbon (70 proof/35% ABV), and while the sweetness isn?t integrated perfectly into the texture of the spirit, I?d take this in a heartbeat over Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey.

HAVANA (AP) ? A dispute is brewing in Cuba over the estate of a prominent intellectual and close associate of the Castro brothers after authorities carried out a surprise search of his home.
Officials say they conducted an inventory of art, books, furniture and documents belonging to the late Alfredo Guevara, and three valuable paintings were determined to be missing.
His family members accuse authorities of carrying out an unjustified and intrusive weekend raid, breaking down doors, hauling away various items in trucks and refusing to explain their actions.
"We are very taken aback," granddaughter Claudia Guevara, an actress and model who lives in Mexico, told The Associated Press late Wednesday. "They entered our house without giving us prior warning, for no reason whatever and without us being in the country."
Alfredo Guevara was a filmmaker and longtime devoted communist with ties to Fidel and Raul Castro dating back to the brothers' days as young bearded rebels. He was a major figure in Cuba's cultural world following the 1959 Cuban Revolution until his death April 19 of a heart attack, at the age of 87.
Gladys Collazo, president of Cuba's National Council of Cultural Heritage, said authorities became concerned last week when neighbors reported that people were coming and going from Guevara's home at night, and deployed police to secure it.
"The family ... is not in the country and we were very worried about the possible loss or removal of important objects," Collazo was quoted as saying by the official magazine La Jiribilla, after word of the search got out. "Our position from the very beginning has been to protect our heritage."
But relatives were indignant.
Family members said more than 20 cultural officials and police carried out the search Saturday and Sunday and were still inside the home. The granddaughter said friends witnessed state agents removing various items in two trucks, and the family had tried unsuccessfully to reach Cuban cultural officials.
"I would love for somebody to contact me and say what my brother and I, who are the legitimate owners and inheritors along with my parents, have done to cause them to remove all our belongings and even change the locks on the doors," Claudia Guevara said.
In an online exchange, she said she was positive nobody had been removing valuables before the raid because the house was under lock and key.
Authorities denied breaking down doors, saying the home's caretaker let them in and cooperated with their inventory. Collazo also said the family had been informed that they had 60 days to register any belongings that qualify as objects of cultural heritage.
Cuban law allows individuals to inherit and own such items, but they must be entered into a special registry and may not be taken out of the country.
A man who answered the door at the Guevara home Wednesday night declined to comment.
Guevara was the founder of the Cuban Art and Cinematography Institute and the Festival of New Latin American Cinema, and a number of envelope-pushing films, such as "Strawberry and Chocolate," were made on his watch.
Many credited him with nurturing filmmakers, directors, writers, artists and musicians and sheltering them from criticism by Communist authorities. However some criticized his close ties to the Castros and said he did not do enough to defend artistic freedom.
Collazo said three unidentified "masterpieces" of Cuban painting were unaccounted for at Guevara's house, and a police investigation is ongoing.
"We are conducting an exhaustive review of the items of various types," she told La Jiribilla. "In the home there are paintings, works of art, documents, photographs, furniture and other objects of cultural interest."
"What we are doing is rescuing (Guevara's) extraordinary legacy," Collazo said. "The work of Alfredo Guevara is essential for our political and cultural history, and his tremendous contributions to cinema and Latin American and world culture should be permanently preserved."
Claudia Guevara argued that his will should be respected.
"My grandfather Alfredo's will makes clear that absolutely all his belongings and documents belong to his son, his daughter-in-law and his grandchildren," she said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Excessive heat is the No. 1 weather killer in the United States and it's at its most dangerous when it doesn't cool down at night.
The current heat wave over California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico has temperatures hitting triple digits, with little relief at night. Hot weather is also baking the rest of the far West, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Utah and Montana.
Q: What's so disturbing about this current heat wave?
A: It's unrelenting stubbornness. There is no relief at night. Phoenix set a record for highest nighttime temperature: 91. Las Vegas has gone three days without getting below 90, according to readings at the airport.
"Nighttime heat is especially bad," said Eli Jacks, chief of fire and public weather services at the National Weather Service. "Not to get below 90 is crazy."
Q: What's so dangerous about that?
If you aren't in an air-conditioned place, "your body never has a chance to recover" at night, Jacks said. Normally the "feels-like" index ? which factors in temperature and humidity ? has to get to 80 degrees or below for your body to recover from the daytime heat, Jacks said.
The lack of nighttime cooling is more dangerous than the 117 degree all-time record in Las Vegas, experts said.
Q: How do heat waves compare to other weather killers?
A: In recent years, heat has been more deadly than other weather extremes in the United States.
On average, heat waves are killing about 117 people a year, according to figures from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. However, those numbers are incomplete and only based on reports during periods of extreme heat. The much more comprehensive numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that on average 658 people die each year from too much heat.
Q: Who is most at risk?
A: The elderly and children. The elderly make up 36 percent of heat deaths in the past decade, according to the CDC. And of all the excessive heat deaths, 69 percent are men. Also on average, 37 children left in car seats die from heat each year, according to a study at San Francisco State University.
Q: What can you do to stay safe?
A: Drink lots of water; the dry heat in the Southwest evaporates sweat so quickly that people don't notice they are perspiring and get dehydrated more quickly, Jacks said. Stay in the shade and out of the heat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Use sunblock of SPF 15 or higher. Wear light-colored clothing and light clothing. Reduce use of caffeine and alcohol, which tend to dehydrate, and slow down.
Q: So what's causing all this?
A: Part of it is normal summer heat spurts, said meteorologist Kenneth James of the Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Md. But there's another factor and that's the jet stream.
Normally the jet stream moves generally west-to-east, but when it slows and swings dramatically to the north or south, extreme weather can happen.
What's happening now is "a really big kink in the jet stream, about as big as you can see anytime, covering the whole western U.S.," said heat wave expert Ken Kunkel, a professor of atmospheric sciences at North Carolina State University.
To the west of the kink, in Arizona and Nevada, there's a high pressure system just parked there with stagnant heat, Kunkel said. And to its east are cool ? even record cool ? temperatures in Texas, he said.
Q: When will it end?
A: The extreme heat should continue for about a week, but it won't set records, James said.
Q: Is this related to the deadly Arizona fire?
A: "There's most assuredly a link" between the heat wave and the fire, Jacks said. It gets hot with extremely dry air, and then a no-rain lightning strike ignites bone-dry fuel into a fire.
Q: Is this global warming?
A: No single event can be blamed solely on man-made global warming, scientists and meteorologists say. But this is the type of heat wave than scientists have long said will be more common as the world warms.
Some, but not all, scientists also theorize that the jet stream is having more of these crazy kinks lately because of a warming Arctic and melting sea ice.
Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann said there's an element of randomness in the current weather. Yet with all-time heat records in the past few years being broken at three times the expected rate, he said, "there can be little doubt that climate change and global warming are playing a role."
