NASSAU, The Bahamas ? Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry Gladstone Christie during a press conference on Thursday, congratulated the music group Baha Men who will soon sign a formal recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment.

?They are each in their own right, experienced musicians and artists, and connectively they are a very strong and potent force,? the Prime Minister said.? ?They have the capacity to again impact the world.?

He told the group members? that they are a wonderful example for other aspiring Bahamian musicians, and they will be able to promote the country with the backing of a company with influence all over the world.

Besides members of Baha Men, also present were Minister of Tourism the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe; Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr. the Hon. Daniel Johnson; Afo Verde, President, Sony Music Entertainment, Latin American Division and Fernando Cabral, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sony Music Entertainment, Latin American Division.

The Prime Minister noted that this is the perfect time for such an announcement to be made, as the government made its commitment to developing the arts known in the Speech From the Throne read during the Opening of Parliament the day before.
Prime Minister Christie met with Sony executives prior to winning the general elections, with the intention that if he won, a strategy would already be in the works to enable the company to promote The Bahamas in various facets around the world.

He also wanted to establish a relationship with Sony, so that Bahamian recording artists could be signed to contracts on an annual basis.

?The same way we have won gold medals in the Olympics, or produced top heart and neurosurgeons in our country, the talent is there in music and the performing arts,? the Prime Minister said.

Fernando Cabral said Sony executives ?were blown away by the performance of Baha Men? during the musical showcase at the company?s annual convention held this year at Atlantis instead of its normal venue, New York City.

?Our President of A&R (who signs talent to the company) said very accurately, that we have all seen hundreds of showcases before and without a doubt, the one this past Tuesday evening was the best that we have ever witnessed.

?During showcases, the Executives just sit very politely and listen very critically, but not this time? by the second song, everyone was out of their seats and dancing uncontrollably in front of the stage.?

Mr. Cabral explained that the Junkanoo sound was something they had never heard before and the band?s performance was simply ?awesome?.
?We want that Bahamian sound in our catalogue.? There will be no watering down.?

The Executive said midway through the group?s performance, Obi Pindling, the company?s attorney in The Bahamas was asked if the group was presently signed to anyone.

?We decided on the spot, to extend an invitation for Baha Men to become part of the Sony family.

Mr. Cabral said, ?It is our intention, as soon as we return to our respective offices, to have our attorneys prepare a formal recording contract to offer to the Baha Men.

?We have no doubt whatsoever that this is only the start of a wonderful relationship between Sony Music Entertainment and the musical talent of your wonderful country, and hopefully even more,? he said.

To 4G Or Not 4G? Apple Pulls ?WiFi+4G? Branding For iPads

Screen Shot 2012-05-13 at 11.00.32 AMWhat is 4G? Many an armchair philosopher over the past few weeks has pondered this concept and now, thanks to a minor tempest caused by upset customers, Apple has changed their iPad branding from "WiFi+4G" to "WiFi+Cellular." Although the iPads were compatible with US 4G networks, the iPads didn't work with international 4G connections, thereby dropping a few folks in Australia into a tizzy. To prevent this, Apple put the old moniker down the memory hole and replaced it with the new naming convention.

Audi e-bike W?rthersee lets you pop wheelies eco-style, plays nice with your smartphone

Image

We're no stranger to e-bikes here, but most of the examples we've seen so far have very much been meant for A-to-B rides. Audi's aiming to fix that with its e-bike Wörthersee prototype. The carbon fiber transport not only has a strong 2.3kW motor -- the most powerful ever in a bike, so says Audi -- but can use that power for tricks. You can flick the Wörthersee into a wheelie mode and either shift your weight around or leave it fully automatic, depending on the fierceness of your stunt skills. Not that it'll be a timid ride if you prefer to keep both wheels on the ground, as a motor-assisted pedaling mode will take you up to 50MPH, and you can still ride at 31MPH if you're not keen on using your legs. That's faster than the already speedy Grace One City we tried, folks. The vorsprung durch technik also comes through a smartphone tie-in, although in a much more stunt-savvy way than the app- and tuning-focused Ford E-Bike Concept: it tracks video and trick runs, both for its own game system and for bragging rights on Facebook.

With a very light 3.5-pound carbon fiber frame and a quick 2.5-hour charge-up time, the e-bike Wörthersee sounds like a wild ride that will charge quickly enough for a spin on your lunch break, but we wouldn't rush to put down a deposit. Audi is calling the prototype a "show bike," which is a sign than the design as-is won't show up at the local sports store. We'll let you know if the Wörthersee or a more pragmatic descendant makes the leap to a dealer.

Mobile ? Facebook And Google Can?t Live With It And They Can?t Live Without It

zuckerbergThis week Facebook did a virtually unprecedented thing. In the middle of its IPO roadshow it modified its S1 filing in reaction to questions it had been being asked by analysts. The modification I refer to stated that Facebook wanted to acknowledge a trend; that trend is the declining ARPU (average revenue per user) being seen in its current quarter. This trend is being driven, Facebook said, by the growth in its usage on mobile platforms and its inability to monetize those platforms in the same way, or at the same rate, as its desktop/laptop offerings. The previous iterations of the S1 had all contained the possibility of this trend. Even the likelihood of it. But the actuality of the trend was noted here for the first time in the S1.
