CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's highest court is to examine the legitimacy of the upper house of parliament, a case likely to increase the legal uncertainty of the country's political transition and leave it without a legislature.
The Supreme Constitutional Court has already forced the lower house to dissolve under a June ruling that said an electoral law used to elect both chambers - and which resulted in an Islamist dominated parliament - was unfair.
The new case once again pits independent lawyers against the Islamists that have come to power since the downfall of Hosni Mubarak and who see the court as stuffed with the former president's appointees.
On Sunday, at its first session since going on strike over President Mohamed Mursi's decision to expand his powers, the court set January 15 as the date for the first hearing. It will also examine the legitimacy of the Islamist-dominated assembly that wrote the constitution that Mursi fast-tracked to approval at a referendum this month.
If the court rules against the upper house - which seems likely as it was elected under the same law that the court found lacking in the lower house case in June - Egypt will have a legislative vacuum until new parliamentary elections, expected to start in about two months.
The upper house assumed legislative powers just last week under the new constitution.
The June ruling said the transitional electoral law - drafted by the generals then ruling post-Mubarak Egypt in consultation with political parties - gave too much power to parties, at the expense of independent candidates.
The court had to postpone the hearings from early December due to a protest outside its building by Islamists.
"The (court) renews its condemnation of those who participated in it, as well as those who remained silent," the court said in a statement.
Mursi had shielded both the assembly which drafted the constitution and the upper house of parliament from legal challenges in a decree he issued in November which touched off protests by critics who accused him of a power grab.
Mursi revoked the decree ahead of the referendum in which the constitution was approved by 64 percent of those who voted.
The new constitution cut the number of judges who sit in the Supreme Constitutional Court to 11 from 18. One of Mursi's most vocal critics was among the judges to leave the court.
The woman who has led prominent Christchurch department store Ballantynes through the city's earthquakes says the "momentum of change" is starting to sweep across the quake-hit city.
Ballantynes managing director Mary Devine has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to business.
Devine was appointed to her Ballantynes role shortly before the February 2011 earthquake, becoming the first female and the first non-family managing director since 1938.
She served as the chief executive of retailer EziBuy before taking on the job, and has been on the Canterbury Business Leaders Group executive.
Devine also served as a board member of New Zealand Global Women, and played a key role in developing the organisation's women in leadership programme.
Devine said she was "surprised and humbled" when notified of the honour.
"I was shocked: I had to read it [the letter] a couple of times actually to check that it was true."
She had faced "major challenges" since starting at Ballantynes.
She rated getting the department store ready for trading after the earthquake one of her career highlights.
"It's been all hands on deck from day one, and I'm very proud of the great work that the team has done."
The Re:Start container mall, made up of small shipping container shops around Ballantynes, had also been a major success.
Devine said the mall's success could provide a blueprint for the future of the retail precinct.
"It's something that was achieved in a very unique way, and it's very innovative on a global scale."
She had enjoyed her work with NZ Global Women, and felt the group had helped to increase the number of women leaders while drawing attention to the issue of gender representation.
"We have a strong voice at the table now, especially on the issue of diversity on boards."
Devine said 2013 would be "an exciting year" for Ballantynes and the city as rebuilding plans gathered pace and the future shape of the city started to take hold.
"We've done a lot of hard yards, but we can definitely feel the momentum of change," she said.

She has freckles, a normal-sized head, wears t-shirts and jeans. She is also "awkwardly dressed" and "pretty cute." She is the average female Mac user, according to an infographic complied and released by software start-up BlueStacks.
The company, which makes software that allows Android apps to run on computers, just released a new version of its Mac app. Install the program and you can access Android apps right from Apple's OS X operating system - Angry Birds, Instagram, all your favorites.
But the company didn't want to just release the software. In honor of the announcement, it created an infographic based on data from its Facebook users about what Ms. Mac looks like.
According to the graphic, which you can view below, 27 percent of female Mac users have long hair, 48 percent wear glasses and 52 percent are under 20. Forty percent use Mac OS X Lion, 14 percent OS X Mountain Lion, 20 percent OS X Leopard, and 8 percent Snow Leopard.
However, you should take these findings with a grain of salt; they are based primarily on responses from BlueStacks' 1.1 million Facebook fans. Some of it is based on data from Nielsen, but BlueStacks confirmed that the majority of the information was pulled from its own users and its social media fans.
"We have a lot of early adopter fans who were into helping," BlueStacks VP of marketing, John Gargiulo, told ABC News. "We also hired a data scientist who has been parsing through the data and talking with people who use BlueStacks. We like to do things that are a bit fun and different."
BlueStacks created a similar infographic about Android users last year. Not surprisingly, 70 percent of male Android users wear t-shits and 62 percent wear jeans. (It's like that line from that '90s movie "Can't Hardly Wait": "He is sort of tall, with hair and wears t-shirts sometimes.")
Regardless, if you're looking for a fun infographic / full body image of the alleged Ms. Mac 2012, you can click the image below.
America is rapidly becoming a nation of takers.? An increasing number of Americans expect the government to take care of them from the cradle to the grave, and they expect the government to dig into the pockets of others in order to pay for it all.? This philosophy can be very seductive, but what happens when the number of takers eventually outnumbers the number of producers?? In?11 different U.S. states, the number of government dependents exceeds the number of private sector workers.? This list of states includes some of the biggest states in the country: California, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Maine, Kentucky, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, New Mexico and Hawaii.? It is interesting to note that seven of those states were won by Barack Obama on election night.? InCalifornia, there are 139 ?takers? for every 100 private sector workers.? That is crazy!? The American people have become absolutely addicted to government money, and it gets worse with each passing year.? If you can believe it, entitlements accounted for?62 percent?of all federal spending in fiscal year 2012.? It would be one thing if we could afford all of this spending, but unfortunately we simply cannot.? We are?drowning in debt, and we are stealing more than a hundred million more dollars from future generations with each passing hour.? No bank robber in history can match that kind of theft.

CLAREMONT, Calif. (AP) ? Ray Collins, who invited guitarist Frank Zappa to join the band that eventually became the Mothers of Invention, has died at age 75.
Collins' friend Patrick Brayer tells the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (http://bit.ly/ZECaMX ) that the musician from Claremont, Calif., died Monday, five days after a heart attack.
Collins brought Zappa to R&B cover band the Soul Giants in 1964. By 1966, they had become the Mothers of Invention, releasing their first album, "Freak Out," on Verve Records.
Collins sang on three albums, then left the Mothers, saying their comedic approach to music didn't suit him.
He pursued little music afterward and spent his last years living in a van, but was a well-known character and conversationalist on the streets of Claremont, a college town east of Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? FBI files on Marilyn Monroe that could not be located earlier this year have been found and re-issued, revealing the names of some of the movie star's acquaintances who drew concern from government officials and her own entourage.
The files had previously been heavily redacted, but more details are now public in a version of the file recently obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act. The updated files reveal that some in Monroe's inner circle were concerned about her association with Frederick Vanderbilt Field, who was disinherited from his wealthy family over his leftist views.
The FBI's files on Monroe show the extent the agency was monitoring the actress for ties to communism in the years before her death in August 1962. A trip to Mexico earlier that year to shop for furniture brought her in contact with Field, who was living in the country with his wife in self-imposed exile. Informants reported to the FBI that a "mutual infatuation" had developed between Field and Monroe, which caused concern among some in her inner circle, including her therapist, the files state.
"This situation caused considerable dismay among Miss Monroe's entourage and also among the (American Communist Group in Mexico)," the file states. It includes references to an interior decorator who worked with Monroe's analyst reporting her connection to Field to the doctor.
Field's autobiography devotes an entire chapter to Monroe's Mexico trip, "An Indian Summer Interlude." He mentions that he and his wife accompanied Monroe on shopping trips and meals and he only mentions politics once in a passage on their dinnertime conversations.
"She talked mostly about herself and some of the people who had been or still were important to her," Field wrote in "From Right to Left." ''She told us about her strong feelings for civil rights, for black equality, as well as her admiration for what was being done in China, her anger at red-baiting and McCarthyism and her hatred of (FBI director) J. Edgar Hoover."
Under Hoover's watch, the FBI kept tabs on the political and social lives of many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplin and Monroe's ex-husband Arthur Miller. The bureau has also been involved in numerous investigations about crimes against celebrities, including threats against Elizabeth Taylor, an extortion case involving Clark Gable and more recently, trying to solve who killed rapper Notorious B.I.G.
The AP had sought the removal of redactions from Monroe's FBI files earlier this year as part of a series of stories on the 50th anniversary of Monroe's death. The FBI had reported that it had transferred the files to a National Archives facility in Maryland, but archivists said the documents had not been received. A few months after requesting details on the transfer, the FBI released an updated version of the files that eliminate dozens of redactions.
For years, the files have intrigued investigators, biographers and those who don't believe Monroe's death at her Los Angeles area home was a suicide.
A 1982 investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office found no evidence of foul play after reviewing all available investigative records, but noted that the FBI files were "heavily censored."
That characterization intrigued the man who performed Monroe's autopsy, Dr. Thomas Noguchi. While the DA investigation concluded he conducted a thorough autopsy, Noguchi has conceded that no one will likely ever know all the details of Monroe's death. The FBI files and confidential interviews conducted with the actress' friends that have never been made public might help, he wrote in his 1983 memoir "Coroner."
"On the basis of my own involvement in the case, beginning with the autopsy, I would call Monroe's suicide 'very probable,'" Noguchi wrote. "But I also believe that until the complete FBI files are made public and the notes and interviews of the suicide panel released, controversy will continue to swirl around her death."
Monroe's file begins in 1955 and mostly focuses on her travels and associations, searching for signs of leftist views and possible ties to communism. One entry, which previously had been almost completely redacted, concerned intelligence that Monroe and other entertainers sought visas to visit Russia that year.
The file continues up until the months before her death, and also includes several news stories and references to Norman Mailer's biography of the actress, which focused on questions about whether Monroe was killed by the government.
For all the focus on Monroe's closeness to suspected communists, the bureau never found any proof she was a member of the party.
"Subject's views are very positively and concisely leftist; however, if she is being actively used by the Communist Party, it is not general knowledge among those working with the movement in Los Angeles," a July 1962 entry in Monroe's file states.

?Egyptian economy in intensive care?, ?Egypt economy is headed towards collapse and complete bankruptcy ?, ?Egyptian economy is in free-fall? and ?Egypt on brink of deep economic crisis? blasted some Egyptian media in the current post-referendum phase of their vicious and desperate campaign, as the country?s credit rating is reduced, with a clear negative impact on investment projects.
The purpose of this treacherous war is to hit the Egyptian economy and stop the wheel of economic development. In fact, the Egyptian economy has witnessed a relatively remarkable improvement, confirmed by a Ministry of Finance report issued in November 2012.
That report reveals an increase in state revenues amounting to 40.3% during the previous five months, to reach 108,5 billion Egyptian Pounds (approximately US$18 billion), compared with 77.4 billion pounds during the same period of the previous year.
Furthermore, tax revenues collected from the Petroleum Authority and the Suez Canal increased by 17.3% and 15.6%, respectively, recording an increase of about 5 billion pounds.
Views of a number of experts affirm the reality of the Egyptian economy. To begin with, financial analyst Mohsen Adel, vice-president of the Egyptian Society for the Study of Finance and Investment confirms that Egypt cannot fall into bankruptcy as some claim. The concept of economic bankruptcy is that the State becomes unable to pay its financial obligations and repay its debts, and its banks file for bankruptcy.
?This is not happening at all. Egypt is not lagging behind on debts inherited from the former regime in the worst economic conditions. The devaluation of the Egyptian pound during the past few weeks is about 1%, which does not represent a threat to the local currency.
?Egypt has a cash reserve and fixed income ? including revenues from the Suez Canal, oil and tourism ? that exceed 15 billion dollars annually.?
Meanwhile, Dr. Rifaat Al-Awadi, professor of economics at Al-Azhar University said, ?The bankruptcy trap fables sung so fervently by political parties and politicized media affiliated with the former regime, with chaos and confusion they create with their baseless rumors, do adversely affect the Egyptian economy and have a negative impact on our relationship with foreign markets and our international relations. They also freeze the economic market at home?.
Further, Mohamed Gouda, member of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP)?s Economic Committee, points that those promoting the idea of ??bankruptcy in Egypt either talk without sure knowledge or wish to undermine the country?s stability and prosperity.
?The idea of ??bankruptcy is based on the State?s inability to repay its external debt. This does not exist in the case of Egyptian economy. Debt is currently limited to about US$34 billion. Egypt also makes regular repayments on this debt.
?The current crisis in the Egyptian economy is manifest only in an increase in the budget deficit, which is expected to be about 180 billion Egyptian pounds this year. Additionally, public debt has increased to 135 billion Egyptian pounds. All this costs the State 230 billion pounds in external debt premiums and interest. ?
Dr. Gouda stresses that, despite the severity of this crisis, Egypt has the human and material potential and resources that will enable it to achieve a great economic boom in a short period of time. He denied that the Egyptian economy will fall into bankruptcy in the near future.
?Of course, certain parties deliberately seek to mislead public opinion, spreading panic in the Egyptian society. Evidently, the goal of promoting such lies is to terrorize investors to stop investing their money in Egypt.
?In fact, Egypt?s credit rating was reduced 6 times in the past two years, since the revolution. The report on the latest reduction states that the reason for that is the unrest and turmoil in the political arena. This is reassuring, because those causes of chaos will disappear once state institutions are rebuilt and everyone returns to work and production.?
Dr. Gouda further points that as soon as stability is achieved in the political situation, the World Bank loan contract is signed, and political reforms are carried out, Egypt?s credit rating will rise again, which will certainly allow an outlook of optimism for the Egyptian economy, so investment would return and conditions would generally improve without delay.

How I Made $60 Just by Asking-Wealth Tip #21
The Day Started Out Badly- While trying to plug in my cell phone charger, I pushed the desktop computer monitor on the floor. I figured it was ruined, but took it to the repair shop just in case it could be fixed. When I got to the shop, they asked for the power cord to see if it functioned. I forgot the cord and drove back home to get ?it.
After the repair guy plugged in the cord, he confirmed it was broken. So I asked if they had a new monitor for sale. If I could buy a new one at a good price, I?d get back to work quickly.

Make $3,600 by managing your clothes spending ? BarbaraFriedberg?s WEALTH TIPS #17
Clothes cost less than ever, exploit the savings.?Inflation makes almost everything more expensive. Yet, clothing costs remain constant over decades.
Make $3,600 with this smart clothes shopping strategy. Here?s how:
Stock up on the classics when they go on sale at the end of the season. Classic slacks, shirts, and ?t shirts, don?t go out of style. At the end of every season, clothes are marked way down. Use that opportunity to buy the items you will wear in the future. My husband loved the Marc Anthony line at Kohl?s but was unwilling to pay $40 for a shirt. At the end of August, he bought the shirt when it dropped to $10. That?s a $30 savings (?)

Tip to Create Lifetime Security and Satisfaction ? BarbaraFriedberg?s WEALTH TIPS #14
A bleak future does not have to be your reality. The theory of life cycle economics purports that the best measure of your financial well being is how much enjoyment you receive from consuming experiences, goods, and services throughout your lifetime. This theory shifts from the view that dollars in the bank equals happiness to the reality that how you live and consume, both now and in the future determines your life satisfaction. Human Capital is the Starting Point Your earning power or human capital equals in the millions of dollars over a lifetime. Every decision you make to consume today, impacts your ability to consume in the future. You want a nice flow of income today, tomorrow, and in retirement.(?)

VATICAN CITY, Dec 24 (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, leading the world's Roman Catholics into Christmas, on Monday urged people to find room for God in their fast-paced lives filled with the latest technological gadgets.
The 85-year-old pope, marking the eighth Christmas season of his pontificate, celebrated a solemn Christmas Eve mass in St Peter's Basilica, during which he appealed for a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict and an end to the civil war in Syria.
At the mass for some 10,000 people in the basilica and broadcast to millions of others on television, the pope wove his homily around the theme of God's place in today's modern world.
"Do we have time and space for him? Do we not actually turn away God himself? We begin to do so when we have no time for him," said the pope, wearing gold and white vestments.
"The faster we can move, the more efficient our time-saving appliances become, the less time we have. And God? The question of God never seems urgent. Our time is already completely full," he said.
The leader of the world's some 1.2 billion Roman Catholics said societies had reached the point where many people's thinking processes did not leave any room even for the existence of God.
"Even if he seems to knock at the door of our thinking, he has to be explained away. If thinking is to be taken seriously, it must be structured in such a way that the 'God hypothesis' becomes superfluous," he said.
"There is no room for him. Not even in our feelings and desires is there any room for him. We want ourselves. We want what we can seize hold of, we want happiness that is within our reach, we want our plans and purposes to succeed. We are so 'full' of ourselves that there is no room left for God."
PEACE CANDLE
Bells inside and outside the basilica chimed when the pope said "Glory to God in the Highest," the words the gospels say the angels sang at the moment of Jesus' birth.
Earlier on Monday the pope appeared at the window of his apartments in the apostolic palace and lit a peace candle, as a larger-than-life nativity scene was unveiled in St Peter's Square below.
Reflecting on the gospel account of Jesus born in a stable because there was no room for Mary and Joseph in the inn, he said when people find no room for God in their lives, they will soon find no room for others.
"Let us ask the Lord that we may become vigilant for his presence, that we may hear how softly yet insistently he knocks at the door of our being and willing.
"Let us ask that we may make room for him within ourselves, that we may recognise him also in those through whom he speaks to us: children, the suffering, the abandoned, those who are excluded and the poor of this world," he said.
He asked for prayers for the people who "live and suffer" in the Holy Land today.
The pope called for peace among Israelis and Palestinians and for the people of Syria, Lebanon and Iraq and prayed that "Christians in those lands where our faith was born may be able to continue living there, that Christians and Muslims may build up their countries side-by-side in God's peace."
The Vatican is concerned about the exodus from the Middle East of Christians, many of whom leave because they fear for their safety. Christians now comprise five percent of the population of the region, down from 20 percent a century ago.
According to some estimates, the current population of 12 million Christians in the Middle East could halve by 2020 if security and birth rates continue to decline.
At noon (1100 GMT/6 AM ET) the pope will deliver his twice-yearly "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) blessing and message from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica. (Reporting By Philip Pullella; Editing by Myra MacDonald)

I worked with OSL productions to edit and help with parts of the filming of this video to send out to companies interested in sponsoring my boyfriend. It was filmed in Leucadia, California we used a fisheye camera, and edited on iMovie. Although it looks sloppy, casual and thrown together, editing it to make it look completely effortless took more time than it did to film the entire thing. The random parts where they fall or mess up is hard to determine wether or not to leave it in the video or take it out because if you take out too many parts where they fall, then it doesn't feel as genuine. I kept all the clips of goofing around, I just shortened them to not distract from the main purpose of the video. This was released a year ago and the last time I talked to him he told me he eventually got sponsored by two of the companies we sent the video to, and he is now competing regularly. Feedback and advice would be nice even if you don't have background in film http://vimeo.com/30288589
Deforestation in the Amazon equals net losses of diversity for microbial communitiesPublic release date: 24-Dec-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Research from an international team of microbiologists has revealed a new concern about deforestation in the Amazon rainforest a troubling net loss in the diversity among the microbial organisms responsible for a functioning ecosystem.
The group, which includes professors from The University of Texas at Arlington, University of Oregon, University of Massachusetts, Michigan State University and University of Sao Paulo, sampled a 100 square kilometer area, about 38 square miles, in the Fazenda Nova Vida site in Rondnia, Brazil, a location where rainforest has been converted to agricultural use. Their findings in part validated previous research showing that bacteria in the soil became more diverse over the years, as it was converted to pasture.
But their findings contradicted prior thinking by showing that the loss of restricted ranges for different kinds of bacteria communities resulted in a biotic homogenization and net loss of diversity overall. Scientists worry that the loss of genetic variation in bacteria across a converted forest could reduce ecosystem resilience.
"We have known for a long time that conversion of rainforest land in the Amazon for agriculture results in a loss of biodiversity in plants and animals. Now we know that microbial communities which are so important to the ecosystem also suffer significant losses," said Jorge Rodrigues, the University of Texas at Arlington assistant biology professor who was part of the research team and is first author on a recent publication of the findings.
The new research is described in a paper appearing online the week of Dec. 24-28 in advance of publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper is called "Conversion of the Amazon rainforest to agriculture results in biotic homogenization of soil bacterial communities."
Klaus Nsslein, project director for the published research and associate professor of microbiology at the University of Massachusetts, said the team found important differences between the pasture and forest soil. For example, the number of bacterial species in the pasture soil was higher, but those species were also less related to one another than species in the forest soil.
"The combination of loss of forest species and the homogenization of pasture communities together signal that this ecosystem is now a lot less capable to deal with additional outside stress," Nsslein said.
In addition to Rodrigues and Nsslein, co-authors of the paper include: Babur Mirza, UT Arlington; Vivian Pellizari, Siu Mui Tsai, Brigitte Feigl and Fabiana Paula, the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil); Rebecca Mueller and Brendan Bohannan, University of Oregon; Kyunghwa Baek and George Hamaoui, University of Massachusetts; Ederson da C. Jesus, Embrapa-Agrobiologia (Brazil) and James Tiedje, Michigan State University.
"Our findings are especially important because they support the idea that microbes are impacted by human-caused environmental change," said Bohannan, director of the University of Oregon's Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. This knowledge is important because microbes are responsible for critical environmental processes, such as the recycling of nutrients, the production of clean water and the removal of pollutants, Bohannan said.
Tiedje said the unique study was conducted on a scale that had not been attempted before.
"The systematic and large-scale sampling design of this study gave us the power to see the homogenization," he said.
Scientists on the research team hope their work will provide valuable data to those making decisions about the future of the Amazon rainforest.
"The Amazon represents half of the world's rainforest and is home to one-third of Earth's species, yet the Amazon has one of the highest rates of deforestation," co-authors Pellizari, Tsai and Feigl said in a joint statement. "Agriculture is one of the largest and most dynamic parts of Brazil's economy, so dealing with standing rainforests in the tropics will be tricky, but nevertheless, it is vital that the issue is tackled."
Rodrigues said the research team is currently compiling findings about the potential for recovery of the microbial diversity after pastureland is abandoned and returned to "secondary forest."
"Whether bacterial diversity will completely recover from ecosystem conversion will depend in part on whether the taxa lost due to conversion are truly locally extinct or whether they are present in the pasture sites but of such low abundance that they are undetectable in our study," the paper said.

Edmonds Military Wire: What the fiscal cliff could mean to you
By Michael Schinder
We are only days away from finding out whether or not we as a nation take a dive off this ominous, politically charged fiscal cliff ? and there is much uncertainty and question around how we will do it. Will we do a ?Thelma and Louise? and go charging off or will it be a more gradual dive, like that of a swan coming in for a landing?
Either way, we are going down, not up. And no matter who you are, you will likely feel the impact.
Last week, at the Puget Sound Regional Council?s Defense Partnership meeting, we were informed that our national budget will not be passed and that we will once again be under a CR (Continuing Resolution) for FY13. Fiscal cliff or not, this failure to pass a budget is not good. We also learned that our great state of Washington has some $5 billion in military construction backlog. Under a CR, no new contracts will be issued and as one company CEO expressed to the Congressional representatives in the room, this will cost hundreds of jobs in the Puget Sound region.
But hey, that?s only one data point. How bad can this ?fiscal cliff? thing really be? Hold on ? the experts (and TIME magazine) say it won?t be pretty.
While we all lived to see another day despite the end of the Mayan calendar, come 12:01 am on Jan 1, 2013 the Bush-era income tax cuts expire and that means a tax hike for all earners. Taxes on capital gains and dividends will go up as well. But that last point only affects the rich guys, right?
What if you?re not rich (which in today?s terms means you?re unemployed)? If you?ve been relying on the federal extension for your state unemployment benefits, you may be one of the 2.1 million Americans who will find no check on the day it usually arrives.
For those who are employed, your checks (and mine) will be at least 2 percent smaller because of the expiration of the payroll tax cut. If you earn $50,000 a year, that works out to be about $40 a paycheck. Powdered milk never tasted so good.
If you are in the military, or support the defense industry, expect continued and perhaps even increased troop strength reductions ? and don?t expect a raise. The sequester kicks in on Jan. 2 and that will trigger over 9 percent in defense spending cuts. The Pentagon has been preparing for the sequestration (just in case Congress couldn?t do their job), so it won?t be a huge ripple to the system when it first hits; but moving forward, until the budget standoff is resolved, new contracts are frozen and hundreds of programs and projects will either be delayed, indefinitely suspended, or killed all together. With Boeing and the general defense industry being a significant employer in this state, this will impact the Puget Sound.
It isn?t all bad news though. According to TIME, CEOs with large companies are ?racing to pay dividends before the fiscal cliff.? So, just maybe, your CEO?s heart will grow three sizes before the New Year and you?ll get a nice cash bonus. If this happens, put the cash in your sock drawer for that ?just in case? moment.
So, Happy New Year all ? what the ?fiscal cliff? means to you is that you get a tax hike and a pay cut (or no check). Some of you will have to cut out your coffee budget ? and then we?ll have grumpy people for 2013. Oh joy.

INDIANAPOLIS (Reuters) - An Indianapolis judge Monday entered not guilty pleas on behalf of three people charged in the November house explosion that killed two people and damaged scores of homes, officials said.
Monserrate Shirley and Mark Leonard, who lived in the home that exploded, and Leonard's brother, Bob Leonard Jr., were charged last week with murder and multiple counts of arson.
Investigators said the three blew up Shirley's home to collect insurance money to pay off gambling and credit card debts.
Killed in the blast were Jennifer and John Longworth, who lived next door. Twelve people were injured and 33 neighborhood homes had to be demolished, prosecutors said.
The pleas were entered by Marion County Superior Court Judge Sheila Carlisle, according to Brienne Delaney, a spokeswoman for the Marion County Prosecutor's office. It is typical in Indiana for a judge to enter pleas on suspects' behalf, Delaney explained.
Shirley's attorney, Randall Cable, said he was awaiting information on prosecutors' evidence against his client.
"We're waiting to receive discovery from the prosecutors to see what they have beyond a lot of innuendo," Cable said.
The Leonards had public defenders appointed for them.
Investigators believe a programmable microwave that exploded from the inside out was the source of ignition, and valves that regulate natural gas into the home and to a fireplace were removed, allowing gas to build up over hours.
The personal property insurance on the home had been raised recently to $304,000 and photographs and personal financial records were removed before the explosion, prosecutors allege.
All three suspects are being held without bond. They could face the death penalty or life without parole if found guilty.
A trial is set for March 4.
